When it comes to photographing birds be it in flight or perched then I would have to say that my favourite species of bird to photograph would be Owls, there are 5 species of Owl in the UK (7 with the UK visiting Snowy Owl and introduced European Eagle Owl)
The Little Owl is the smallest Owl we have here in the United Kingdom and it is without a doubt the most charismatic of the Owls you are likely to see, unlike most other Owls that tend to hunt at Dawn and dusk the little Owl can be seen anytime during the day which makes for better sightings of this Owl in good light., this next set of images were taken on a cold December morning, I was set up and waiting from around 7.45am and the first Owl showed up around 8am but unfortunately the sun had not yet come up so the light was pretty much non existent.
The day went by and things were not looking good it was 3pm and still the Owl had not returned, I had almost given up for the day but then at around 3.20pm This little Owl below returned and made an appearance just as the light was starting to fade, shutter speeds were low but my enthusiasm was suddenly lifted as I tried to pull in what little light there was, he hung around for about a minute before he was off but luckily he was back 10 minutes later for a final appearance again only for a minute or so. A truly stunning Owl that was wonderful to watch and photograph even if it was only for a few minutes but I made sure every second counted to get some shots of this beautiful Owl.
Overall the conditions in terms of the light was not great but its to be expected during this time of the year so to keep my ISO down I had to shoot at very slow speeds so there was no margin for error, one slight movement and all that was left would be a blur, but it was just wonderful to sit and watch these remarkable wild Owls which are so full of character.
